The Big Show – A Giant’s World (Silvervision)

When I was a kid growing up in the UK I always loved the giant wrestlers who we all loved to hate.  Giant Haystacks (Loch Ness in WCW) always fitted that bill and then came the woeful Big Daddy who I never really wanted to cheer.  Wrestling in the States has always embraced the larger than life character whether it be Happy Humphrey, Haystacks Calhoun or in the rings that had large audiences as well as wrestler, Andre The Giant and now The Big Show.

Initially called ‘The Giant’ (it took WCW years to come up with that unique name), Paul Wight has enjoyed a far more successful and longer career than for example Giant Gonzalez and The Great Khazi, sorry Khali.  Size really does matter in pro wrestling and despite the steady decline of his fitness he’s carved out a hugely successful career.

Considering he’s been in the business for 16 years it’s a surprise that this is the first DVD that WWE have dedicated to his career, especially after the acquisition of the WCW library.

As was the case with Andre the Giant, there’s a serious side to the story of The Big Show.  His battle with acromegaly is discussed here on the first disc which looks back at his career.  Stories of what it’s like to be a giant are told and they’re reasonably entertaining. Like most WWE documentaries they skip over a lot and are too short.  This one is just 50 minutes in length but at least WWE have the chance to promote his movie ‘Knucklehead’.

Match quality when it comes to The Giant/Big Show aren’t always of the highest quality that’s for sure.  Early WCW matches see him far more agile than he’s ever been in WWE. It’s the usual suspects for his opponents with two Hogan matches and title matches with Flair, Sting and Luger.

Off to WWE next and the match quality suffers as the matches progress unless he has someone to carry him.   He also changes from face to heel  and back again frequently which doesn't always help his character.  However there are some good feuds here especially with  Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero, The Rock and the Undertaker, all of whom do their best to make up for their opponents shortcomings. Oh and of course there’s the obligatory big man v little man feud with Rey Mysterio to enjoy again

The final disc includes his woeful time as ECW Champion, his time in the tag ranks but the highlight of this DVD and perhaps his career is his WM24 clash with Floyd Mayweather.  Thankfully we’re spared his sumo wrestling bout with Akebono.
